Heraldry - The Basics by MirusLuna Heraldry - The Basics by MirusLuna
I've made this to make some people easier the problems of shields - because it is important to plan it in a picture as well as to plan a character.
Another aim was that I have to learn heraldry because I am a kind of tutor in our tradidtioner-team. I'll need to make shields and flags and they need to be period shields and flags.

I hope you'll find it useful! :)

marroon means "brown", sanguine is a very dark red, murrey a very dark purple, tanné is a light brown similar to leather...

Actually, the meanings of tincures, lines and ordinaries are nonsense. They first appeared (according to Woodstock Garter) in the 17th century (and 17th & 18th century heraldry is awful) and have no mediaeval foundations, even if often said. Furthermore, the usual order is Metals - Colours - Stains.
Also, the 'shields on coats of arms' are actually heraldic ordinaries. And the pile you show is a reversed pile.

Nice reference. Shouldn't murray be darker? The color up there seems more like puce.

Good for SCA as well...

My only complaints are the fuzziness of the jpg and the text used to explain things. Old English is a very nice font to use for headers and the like, but blocks of text need to have more legibility.

Other than that, good job!
